Re-Skilling through E-learning

As digitization and automation is becoming a new trend, IT biggies like Infosys, Cognizant and Tech Mahindra are seeing a spate of layoffs. The pink slips are being handed out to thousands of employees as part of their performance appraisal process. Newer technologies in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotic Process Automation and Cloud Computing would now play a role of virtual employee with less manpower. Pink slips are likely to be given for jobs in manual testing, technology support and system administration since these are increasingly going to be managed by AI and robotics process automation based systems. However, there is surge in demand for latest and innovative technologies like data science, artificial intelligence and digital domain specific skills.

Recently, it was also reported that placement in the IIT’s (Indian Institute of Technology) has dropped from 79% to 66%. Seeing the current changing scenario, it is important to focus on learning new technology and trends that is the needed in the job industry. It is often seen that most of the technical and management courses that are taught are mostly centered on questions that would appear in the annual examinations. Most doesn’t get experience of what is happening in the industry while they are studying in the universities. Whenever a company comes for placement, they often see lack of requisite skills in the candidate. This is where E-Learning can play a pivotal in honing different skills. According to a survey report “Efront”, 2012 it claimed that E-learning have reached nearly 2 million people globally. It was also around that time that edX, a non-profit start-up from Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), was set-up. Almost immediately, it started rolling out massive open online courses from best universities in USA.

It is now important to adapt with the new situations. Employees needs to be versatile and learn new skills as per the demand of the industry. This is where E-Learning plays important role. Freshers and out of job employees can take help of E-Learning sites to acquire new skills. The concept of online education has evolved through the years and now it is seen as a serious learning venue. Earlier people used to think of it as watching a few YouTube videos and reading some online content. But now most of the online education sites are equipped to provide right skills widespread across the niche themes for today, and for the future.

E-Learning would now become a great encouragement for people around the world because for so many years access to knowledge was never open to all. Experts believe that the process of making education available around the clock assures better results and that’s encouraging more learners and institutions to take up online education. The growing acquaintance of humans with hi-tech equipment would of course be a reason to boost the rise in E-learning significantly. And while data and digital may be the need of the job market today, in the   future also, every career would have to relate to them.
